Creating a Blueprint of Well-being in Oncology: An Approach to Addressing Cancer Care Clinician Burnout

Biography

Dr Fay J Hlubocky is a licensed clinical health psychologist specializing in Psycho-oncology and a healthcare ethicist at the University of Chicago Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Section of Hematology/Oncology, Supportive Oncology Program, and the Maclean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Her clinical, research, and educational efforts center on the impact of the psychosocial care and ethical concerns in cancer care involving patients and caregivers across the cancer trajectory including: decision-making, patient-reported outcomes (e.g. psychosocial distress, quality of life), survivorship, healthcare disparities, end-of-life/supportive care, clinician burnout/well-being, and oncologist-patient communication. She has experience in trauma-informed care in mental and behavioral health, and holds certification as a clinical trauma professional. Dr Hlubocky also serves as the Director for Fellowtalk an educational skills program designed to improve communication between cancer clinicians, patients, and family. She has collaborated on interdisciplinary research, published multiple scientific, empirical works, and book chapters. In addition, Dr. Hlubocky conducts educational resiliency-wellness sessions addressing burnout and compassion fatigue with oncology physicians, trainees, nurses, and physician assistants at the UC and at several professional medical, oncology conferences. Finally, Dr Hlubocky serves as a member, leader, educator, and advocate within several professional societies: the Alliance for Clinical Trials In Oncology; American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS), International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS), and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO). In 2020, she was honored to be named Co-Chair of ASCO’s Clinician Well-Being Task Force, an Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Oncology Practice, and Cancer.Net’s Associate Editor for Psychosocial Oncology.
